The Challenge

Management and staff of a major distributor in our region began to receive emails pretending to be from one of the suppliers informing them of a wire transfer for the payment of an invoice.

Hidden in the attachment of these phishing emails was a notorious ransomware scam that fooled unwitting victims into downloading a nasty, file-encrypting malware so they’d be forced to pay a ransom in exchange for the decryption key.
Luckily, we had set up a Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery (BC/DR) data backup system so the recovery of the data was possible with out paying out any money. All that was lost were time and productivity.
Still missing though was Security Awareness Computer-Based Training.
Once we conducted the training the management and staff lost time and productivity to these types of physing attacks dropped to almost zero.
So, a combination of BC/DR and training made this risk manageable for a fraction of the cost of paying the ransom.
